CYBATHLON is an international championship for people with disabilities supported by state-of-the-art technical assistance systems. Besides the actual competition, it aims to accelerate the development of assistive devices that are effective in daily life and to promote dialogues with society. The CYBATHLON Wheelchair Series Japan 2019 is focused on the discipline “Powered Wheelchair Race” but shares and serves the overall goals of the CYBATHLON.

Come witness the first CYBATHLON Series in the world!

What is the
CYBATHLON?

Climbing up the stairs, going through a door, sitting at the table – nothing special for many of us. But what if you are in a wheelchair? CYBATHLON faces these challenges with a unique competition in which people with physical disabilities compete against each other to complete everyday tasks using latest technical assistance systems. Engineers and people with disabilities called “pilots”, because they control the technology, collaborate from the development stage of the technology for the championship. They compete as a team – this is why both pilot and engineer are commended on the podium.
The motivation of the teams gathering from all over the world will accelerate the process of developing effective technologies useful in daily life. The competition will highlight the possibilities technology brings and its limits for now. The strenuous efforts of the engineers and pilots stimulate discussions on what is inclusion and equality of people with disabilities in everyday life.
Devised by Prof. Robert Riener of the Sensory-Motor Systems Lab of ETH Zurich, the first CYBATHLON took place in October 2016 in Zurich, Switzerland; 66 pilots from 25 countries participated in the six disciplines of this first CYBATHLON.
Now in May 2019, the first wheelchair only race will take place in Japan.

What technology can do today,

What can be envisioned for the future,

CYBATHLON is moving people and technology!

CYBATHLON Wheelchair Series
Japan 2019

Ahead of the second CYBATHLON with six disciplines to be held in Zurich in 2020, the CYBATHLON Series focusing on one discipline will be organized in different places of the world.
The tasks at the Wheelchair Series Japan 2019 competition follow the official CYBATHLON rules and reflect obstacles faced in everyday life. Although a time limit is set for each race, speed is a secondary factor. Most important is that the tasks are completed correctly, safely and securely.
In order to offer new challenges, some of the tasks from the first CYBATHLON are adapted. For example, the door on the course must now be opened with a robotic arm. Come witness the challenge being tackled for the first time in the world!
